Green Bay Packers: Former NFC North Rival Coach Emerges As Favorite For DC Job

The Green Bay Packers are officially looking for a new defensive coordinator after Joe Barry was fired. Barry’s time as DC has been reported to be over, though he may remain on the Packers staff in some capacity.

As a result, the Packers have a huge hole on their coaching staff. The name of a candidate who has previously spent a significant portion of his coaching career in the Green and Gold draws attention. According to Dustin Baker of Vikings Territory:

From 2014 to 2021, Minnesota’s defense ranked fourth in EPA/Play during the Zimmer era. He specializes in the 4-3 scheme and could install it this offseason if hired this coaching stint.

Depending on the status of the various head coaches, Zimmer could end up being the defensive coordinator for a team like the Washington Commanders, Carolina Panthers or Los Angeles Chargers.

If he stays with the Vikings, who fired him two years ago, Zimmer will unfortunately remain in Green Bay. Zimmer was able to get into Wisconsin because of the popularity of the NFC North and the opportunity to compete with the Vikings twice a year. Meanwhile, Packers fans are touting Zimmer as Barry’s successor.

“Joe Barry is gone,” Packers fan Joe Knegendorf wrote Wednesday after news of Barry’s departure. Who will be the next DC Packers? I hope Mike Zimmer is there.”Zimmer also said at Christmas:“A lot of players come in and want to know more about defending certain games, but not so much about how it’s going to help other players around them improve.

So I guess you have something in your blood. “My dad was a high school coach for a long time.”After the 2000 season, Zimmer became Dallas’ defensive coordinator, a position he held for seven years before taking the same position with the Atlanta Falcons in 2007. Dallas had three top-10 seasons in passing yards and one in the top 10.

He had seven 10-point seasons as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator. He brings tremendous experience and knowledge to our defense attorneys who are committed to their continued success. Zimmer has also been linked to a return to the Cowboys, but with Dan Quinn in place, the Packers might seem like a more likely landing spot.
