Just In:Diogo Jota disagrees with Jamie Carragher after bold Liverpool claim involving Luis Suárez

Jamie Carragher recently claimed that Diogo Jota is the most prolific forward Liverpool has had in the Premier League as he continued his fine form in front of goal.

Diogo Jota has shaken off comments from Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher after recent pr7aise over his goalscoring ability. Jota is enjoying a decent season in front of goal and has already scored 13 times in all competitions despite playing in a number of positions across the front line.

Only Mohamed Salah has scored more than the Portugal international, who is averaging a goal every two games at the moment. Speaking after the recent win over Bournemouth, where Jota scored twice, Carragher suggested that there has been no better finisher than Jota for some time at Anfield.

Carragher said to Sky Sports: “I think of some of the strikers I’ve played alongside: Michael Owen, Luis Suárez, Fernando Torres, Robbie Fowler. I think he [Jota] is the best finisher.”

“Robbie (Fowler) maybe [could be ahead of him] in terms of pure finishing, hard and low, into the corner. But [his two goals against Bournemouth are] typical Jota. When he gets the chance he is so clinical. This season, he’s got a goal or an assist every 84 minutes. There are only two or three players in the Premier League who are higher than that.

“He sums up Liverpool’s recruitment over the last five or six years. He’s a player who was in and out of the Wolves team, and when he was bought a lot of people were scratching their heads. When everyone’s fit, he’s probably not even playing.

“But I still think he’s a better finisher than the likes of Suárez, Torres, even Salah. The only one who can compete with him is Robbie Fowler at the start of the Premier League years.”

Carragher asked fans on X, previously known as Twitter, to share their thoughts on his view. Over 74,000 people participated in this poll, which saw Luis Suárez winning with 43 per cent of the votes. Robbie Fowler came second with 32.3 per cent, followed by Mohamed Salah (13.5 per cent) and Jota (11.2 per cent).

Jota responded to the idea in an interview with Sky Sports, insisting: “I think it’s a bit over the edge. I trust me, but the names that I’ve been linked with were better than me. That’s all.”

The former Wolves star has often been tasked with playing wide on Liverpool’s right in the absence of Salah, who is continuing his recovery from a hamstring injury. Salah is not expected to return for this weekend’s clash with Burnley, with the Carabao Cup final later this month a likelier target.
