In a move seemingly engineered to make football fans feel old, the son of one of the early 2000s’ most consistent wide receivers has chosen a college for next season. Elijah Burress, a wide receiver in the Class of 2025 at DePaul Catholic High School in Wayne, N.J., has committed to Notre Dame. Burress is the son of Plaxico Burress, a Super Bowl champion wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants and New York Jets from 2000–08 and 2011–12. The elder Burress played collegiately at Michigan State from 1998–99; the Spartans defeated the Fighting Irish twice during his tenure there.
He went on to a lengthy NFL career that included four 1,000-yard seasons, including one with the Giants in 2007 the year they won the Super Bowl-although his tenure with New York ended under acrimonious circumstances after he inadvertently shot himself in the right leg at a New York nightclub. Notre Dame is scheduled to open its 2024 season on Aug. 31 against Texas A&M.
