Barcelona on Thursday announced post-tax profits for the 2022–23 season of 304 million euros ($321 million), exceeding the projections of the Spanish giants who are attempting to stabilize their financial status.
Despite expecting 859 million euros in revenue for the current campaign, the club “closed the 2022/23 financial year with a net profit of 304 million euros after tax, higher than that approved in last season’s budget,” according to a statement from Barca.
For 2022–2023, a profit of 274 million euros had been budgeted, which is 30 million euros less than the numbers from Thursday.
The club added that net debt was down from 680 million euros in June 2021 to 552 million euros the previous year.
Barcelona projects an 11 million euro pre-tax profit for the current 2023–24 season.
Barcelona continued, “The club has improved in all sectors of activity,” noting business ventures including ticketing, sponsorship, and merchandise.
“An absolute record” of 100 million euros in sales were reported by Barcelona club shops.
The Spanish league supervises rigorous controls over club expenditure on player transfers and salaries in accordance with financial fair play regulations.
The spending cap for Barca was lowered to 270 million euros two weeks ago.
The previous cap for Barcelona was 649 million euros, which was increased by the club selling future television rights income as one of several financial “levers” it employed.
Given the current circumstances, it is unlikely that Barcelona will make any substantial acquisitions in January; instead, greater spending cuts are required if they are to have enough money to add reinforcements in the summer.
This is true even if a number of players, like Ousmane Dembele, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and others, left the team.
