As Liverpool have gone from strength to strength this season, many heroes have emerged. Some of them, like the reborn Virgil van Dijk or the ever-consistent Alisson Becker, are no surprise.
After all, there are plenty of superstars in this Liverpool team. But even if you have a lot of superstars, you can’t win trophies. And throughout the year, other players have stepped up and really shown their worth. One of them is Joe Gomez, who has excelled in multiple roles. It was a welcome rejuvenation for Gomez, who endured a difficult 2022/2023 season.
There have even been calls to sell the 26-year-old in the summer. As Gomez revealed on the We Are Liverpool podcast today, this is not the first time he has been pushed out of Anfield.”It’s never going to be smooth sailing for eight or nine years,
” the defender admitted. “I had my period. It’s time? I was on the verge of taking out a loan several times. I told Virg that if you had come in the summer of 2017, I would have left and the boat would have sailed and probably been chartered.
“But this happens for a reason. When I come back from injury I feel good physically and mentally, I trained and trained to be a good athlete on paper and I play with confidence. And getting another [contract] was a big moment for me.”
