The New England Patriots are once again looking for a new offensive coordinator. The Patriots have had an offensive coordinator role in recent years. Josh McDaniels took over that role in 2021, then there was no real offensive coordinator in 2022, Matt Patricia called the plays for some reason, and Bill O’Brien recently won the title in 2023. Now the Patriots are entering a new era.
Jerod Mayo, O’Brien decided to return to college and accept the same position with the Ohio State Buckeyes. As New England continues its search for a new coordinator, more details have emerged about O’Brien’s departure, as reported by Greg Bedard of the Boston Sports Journal.
The Patriots were conflicted that neither side was really interested in continuing the relationship, but because of O’Brien, the Patriots were open about it. “, Bedard wrote. But the story goes a little deeper than that. SI’s Albert Breer reported that O’Brien’s resignation was due to a change in Mayo’s philosophy as well as differences between him and the front office.
“Patriots will interview Los Angeles Rams assistants Nick Kaley and Zack Robinson for open offensive coordinator position,” Breer wrote.
“They both have ties to the Patriots, but that’s really a sign of how Jerod Mayo is filling out his staff. That’s not to say Mayo doesn’t have a trusted lieutenant (Belichick’s son is close to Mayo and both have received job offers from him). But it shows that Mayo are not stuck for ideas at any stage of the game.
Why did Bill O’Brien take the Ohio State OC job instead of giving him a chance to compete for the job he already had?” Under O’Brien, who played the same position in 2011, the Patriots offense ranked 30 in passing yards and 31st in points allowed.Being historically underperforming, it made sense to rebuild the offense with a new coach.
