Jerod Mayo has been busy adding to his staff, and the Patriots defensive coordinator position could be down to two candidates.
New England reportedly has four interviews or plans to do so. One person who stood out was defensive backs coach DeMarcus Covington. Covington is “well positioned” to be promoted to defensive coordinator and is a “strong preference” for the position.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler also reported Thursday that “some around the league” are “impressed” that Covington is the “favorite” player for the job. Fowler also reported that Denver Broncos quarterback Christian Parker, whom the Patriots had scheduled to interview, was “in the mix.
“The Patriots also have interviews with New Orleans Saints running backs coach Michael Hodges and Carolina Panthers outside linebackers coach Tem Lucabu, both considered “rising stars” in the league.
While there is a clear picture of who could be the defensive coordinator, nothing is clear about the future of Steve Belichick and Brian Belichick. Bill Belichick’s sons have been offered the opportunity to stay in New England, but it’s unclear if the former Patriots coach is waiting to find his next job and join his staff.
The Patriots also need to fill the vacant offensive coordinator and special teams coordinator positions.
