In the early days of the NFL, quarterback Matt Cassel had the unique role of insurance policy. Drafted in the seventh round by the New England Patriots in 2005, Cassel spent his first few years waiting patiently to succeed the legendary Tom Brady and saw little playing time at USC.
His breakthrough moment came in 2008, when Brady’s season-ending ACL injury forced Cassel into the starting role for 15 games. Despite limited college experience, Cassel jumped at the opportunity.
After New England, he enjoyed more success with the Kansas City Chiefs, earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2010.He recently appeared on the Football Podcast – The Brady Wrestling Match. According to Cassel, he won and gave Brady a simple slice of the pie in his “testosterone-fueled youth.
“Both Cassel and Brady shared an experience as model athletes drafted by MLB teams. Brady played for the Montreal Expos in 1995 and Cassel played for the Oakland Athletics in 2004. Cassel remembers challenging Brady and challenging him to a wrestling match.
Cassel’s win after taking a quick jab to Brady’s body got the attention of his teammates, but it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Defensive back Rodney Harrison and fullback Richard Seymour were in a bad mood and ran onto the field warning Cassel.
Don’t threaten Tom Brady. They sent it with a warning, but the message was clear. Brady’s safety is non-negotiable.
