Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has announced he will step down at the end of his nine-year tenure at the club.Liverpool vice-captains Pepain Lieders and Peter Kravitz and elite development coach Vitor Matos are set to leave at the end of the season.
The German coach’s decision surprised many (but not us). Klopp has become synonymous with the Merseyside club since taking over from Brendan Rodgers in October 2015. The 56-year-old has once again turned Liverpool into a winning machine, rebuilding the squad on a shoestring budget (compared to rivals such as Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea).
The former Mainz 05 and Borussia Dortmund manager led Liverpool to the Europa League final in his first season in England. It was the first European final since 2007. They advanced to the Carabao Cup final, but lost both matches.
The following season, Klopp tried to get Liverpool back into the UEFA Champions League and succeeded. This led to a remarkable 2017/18 season in which they reached the Champions League final before losing to Real Madrid.
Liverpool won the Champions League in 2018/19 and came within one point of winning the Premier League, losing to Manchester City. Klopp won his first Premier League title the following season, before winning the domestic cup in the 2021/22 season. He also won the Super Cup and the Club World Cup and collected every possible trophy.
Liverpool have bounced back in style this season after suffering a slump last season, finishing top of the Premier League with 48 points and advancing to the Carabao Cup final. They remain in the FA Cup and have reached the knockout stages of the Europa League, and Klopp will be looking to end this chapter of his illustrious career with more titles under his belt.
Klopp: “I understand that many people were surprised when they first heard. Of course I can explain it, or at least I try to explain it.””I love everything about this club, I love everything about the city, I love everything about our fans, I love the team and the staff. I love everything But the fact that I’m still making this decision shows that I’m convinced that it’s the decision I need to make.
“Well, how can I say this? I don’t have the strength anymore. I don’t have this problem now. Of course, I realized a while ago that I should have posted about this at some point, but now I don’t have a problem at all. I know I can’t do this over and over again.“After all these years we’ve been together, all the time we’ve spent together, everything we’ve done together, my respect for you has grown and my love for you has grown. And I owe you the least.
