So far, Jurgen Klopp’s decision to leave Liverpool at the end of the season appears to have galvanised his playing squad.
The Reds have played two games since Klopp sensationally announced that he is set to walk away from the club in May. Liverpool have won both of those matches, scoring nine times and conceding three. They’ll be hoping they can use that emotion to get another positive result against Arsenal tomorrow
However, it hasn’t all been good news. There have been suggestions that a couple of senior players could follow Klopp out of the Anfield exit door this summer.
There may also be some concern that those players recently convinced to join the club by Jurgen will feel a little cheesed off. To that, Dominik Szoboszlai’s agent, Matyas Esterhazy, has been speaking publicly about the manager’s decision. In quotes from NB1, Esterhazy suggests that while there is some regret for Szoboszlai, it won’t affect his future at Liverpool.
“Jurgen played a big role in Dominik now playing for Liverpool,” admits the agent. “He has learned some serious things from him that will serve as a very important guide for him later in his life. But that’s football and you have to live with it.
“This decision of the coach has created a situation around the club that will be very difficult to live with at first, but in the long run it will be very easy because everything is clear. The only question is who will take his place. His departure will trigger emotions in the players that I am really looking forward to this second half of the season.”
Esterhazy was speaking after collecting Szoboszlai’s award for Hungarian footballer of the year 2023.
The 23-year-old was voted as the best player from his country in a year which saw him make a £60m move to Liverpool. Having since performed brilliantly for the Reds, it was certainly well deserved.
Szoboszlai’s agent’s comments may raise an eyebrow or two amongst Liverpool supporters, but it doesn’t appear as though there’s anything to worry about.
The Reds’ No.8 is a megastar back in his homeland and Klopp’s departure has been enormous news the planet over. It was a natural question to ask.
It also seems as though Esterhazy and Szoboszlai are still very much looking forward to a future with Liverpool.
Naturally, they’re interested in seeing who comes in next, but that’s normal too. There’s no reason to believe that the Hungary captain – or any other Liverpool player – are looking for the exit door.
Nevertheless, Esterhazy is perhaps correct to say that a ‘difficult’ situation has now been created by Klopp. There’s little doubt that the 56-year-old will have played a huge part in attracting virtually every one of the current squad to Anfield.
As he walks away from the club, it instantly becomes a slightly less attractive proposition. In the long run, we’ll be fine, but until we know what’s happening immediately, some uncertainty will unfortunately remain.
