Latest Liverpool news and gossip as Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso and Sporting CP head coach Ruben Amorim continue to be linked with replacing Jurgen Klopp
Liverpool’s search for a new manager is likely to begin ramping up within the next couple of months.
Jurgen Klopp announced on January 26 that he would be stepping down from his role as Reds boss at the end of the season. The decision has led to increased speculation as to who Liverpool will bring in to succeed the German.
Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso emerged as the early favourite, and such speculation intensified thanks to his connection to the club from his playing career at Anfield. Some of the other candidates reportedly in the frame are Ruben Amorim, Roberto De Zerbi and Julian Nagelsmann.
With speculation continuing to dominate plenty of headlines around who could be the next Liverpool manager, the ECHO has rounded up the latest rumours.
Xabi Alonso continues to be listed as the favourite with the bookmakers to be the next Liverpool manager.
According to Foot Mercato, Liverpool have already made contact with the former midfielder over the prospect of him becoming the club’s new manager. It has been claimed that the contact came after Klopp informed the Reds of his intention to leave the club at the end of the season.
The report also states that Alonso is at the “top of the list” of candidates Liverpool are considering. It has been stated, though, that Alonso is happy at Leverkusen and is not thinking about his future beyond this season.
Sporting CP head coach Ruben Amorim is a name that continues to be linked with the future vacancy at Anfield.
According to journalist Gianluigi Longari, Amorim is a candidate who “stands out” among the Liverpool hierarchy to replace Klopp. The 39-year-old has been in charge of Sporting since 2020 and is looking to win what would be his second Primeira Liga title with the club.
It has been claimed, though, that Alonso remains the first choice for Liverpool to be Klopp’s successor at the end of the season. But it is stated that Amorim is still “under consideration” by the Reds.
Brentford manager Thomas Frank has spoken about his future “ambitions” after reacting to Klopp’s Liverpool exit.
Frank has not been directly linked with the Anfield job but has been listed as a possible outsider, according to the bookmakers. Now he has hinted that his long-term future could be away from Brentford.
“Yeah, I keep up with things and have seen that Xavi and Klopp are leaving,” Frank told Danish outlet Tipsbladet
“Two big coaching personalities for two fantastic clubs, both of whom have done well.
“Regarding myself, I’m insanely happy to be here. I’ve said that before. I have the opportunity to pursue many of my ambitions.
“Like everyone else, I also have ambitions, but it’s hard to say exactly what they are. I’m focused on doing well right now. I have no doubt that we need to finish the second half of the season strongly.”
