Latest Liverpool transfer news and gossip as Tyler Morton’s form while on loan at Hull City has shown why he could replicate the same impact Rodri has at Manchester City
Liverpool youngster Tyler Morton is showing signs he could be a long-term solution for the Reds.
Morton is spending the season on loan at Hull City and is impressing with the Championship club. The midfielder has made 25 appearances in all competitions for the Tigers this campaign, with three goals and four assists.
The 21-year-old plays in the defensive midfield position in the team, often referred to as the No.6 role. Jurgen Klopp spotted the youngster’s ability during the 2021/22 season, handing him his first Premier League start away at Tottenham Hotspur.
Since then, Morton has spent the past 18 months on loan away from Anfield, first at Blackburn Rovers and now with Hull. The midfielder is striving to help the Tigers achieve promotion to the Premier League, with the club currently in sixth place in the Championship table and the final play-off spot.
Morton’s impressive season has seen him compete among the best in the world in one particular aspect of being a midfielder. CIES Football Observatory has ranked the top 100 players in world football when it comes to ball retention under high pressure.
The Liverpool star is ranked 74th overall with an 86.9 percentage – he is also the third-youngest in the complete list at 21 years old, behind only Warren Zaire-Emery of Paris Saint-Germain (17) and Pablo Gavi of Barcelona (21).
Top of the list is Darlington Nagbe of Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer, with a 93.4 percentage. That is ahead of second-placed Rodri, with the Manchester City midfielder having a 92.1 percentage.
To put Morton’s figures into perspective, he is ahead of several established Premier League midfielders. Douglas Luiz (Aston Villa), Billy Gilmour (Brighton), Yves Bissouma (Tottenham Hotspur) and Amadou Onana (Everton) all have a lower percentage than Morton.
No other Liverpool players, either on loan or currently part of Klopp’s squad, feature in the top 10 list. With an uncertain future ahead for the Reds with Klopp’s upcoming departure this summer, Morton is making a case to be part of the club’s long-term midfield plans.
