When you play your entire career for one franchise, we’d imagine it would be hard to even consider putting on another team’s uniform. While it happens every year in every sport, this offseason we could see the Philadelphia Eagles lose one of their most recognizable players via free agency.
Twelve years after becoming the 12th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox may have played his final down with the only pro team he’s ever known. He has just one year left on his contract and has a reasonable cap hit of $5.7 million.
With the Eagles investing heavily in the trenches in recent draft classes by selecting Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter, it appears Philadelphia doesn’t have a huge need for Cox to stick around too, at least not in a featured role.
While Cox, 33, is getting a bit up there in age, he likely still has at least a couple more productive seasons left in the tank, yet it may not be in Philadelphia.
During a recent appearance on Pittsburgh Steelers’ defensive tackle and recent NFL Man of the Year award winner Cam Heyward’s podcast, Cox was asked which team he’d like to play for, if not the Eagles.
Cox didn’t hesitate to state that he’d like to play with the Steelers, where he’d get to team up with Heyward.
“It’s all love. Just respect that you got for the game, respect that I have for the game. The way that you play the game, the way that I play the game, like we definitely could. That would’ve been nice. We could make some things happen.”
If the Eagles are seeking a trade partner for Cox, the Steelers could very well step up to the plate. As mentioned, Cox has a tradeable contract that won’t be a burden to whoever acquires him, and his resume, which includes 70 sacks and six Pro Bowls, speaks for itself.
