Alexis Mac Allister was the outstanding player on what was a great night for Liverpool on Wednesday.
The game against Luton Town had all the makings of being a tough evening at Anfield. With injuries aplenty, Liverpool fans feared the worst when Chiedozie Ogbene headed the Hatters into the lead early on.
Jurgen Klopp was arguing with the crowd and anxiety coursed trough the stadium. It felt like the Reds’ title challenge was slipping away before our very eyes. But after dusting themselves off at half-time, Liverpool came back. Luton manager Rob Edwards commented afterwards about how ‘amazing’ the atmosphere in the ground was and it no doubt helped propel the team on.
It wasn’t all the supporters though, the players still had to do their bit. And no one did it quite like Mac Allister. Even before his whipped corner set up Virgil van Dijk’s equaliser, the 25-year-old was Liverpool’s best player.
Shortly after he’d planted that perfect ball on Van Dijk’s head, Mac Allister was at it again. The Argentine’s ferocious volleyed cross was just begging to be put in by Cody Gakpo. The Dutchman duly obliged.
Two assists then for Macca, and according to Squawka after the game, that was the first time the No.10 had set up two goals in the same match in 119 Premier League appearances.
Mac Allister getting better and better
To the untrained eye, Mac Allister might have been something of an underwhelming addition for Liverpool so far.
For those looking out for goal contributions for midfielders, the World Cup winner will not have featured on their radar.
