A few potential offseason additions for the Pittsburgh Steelers were ruled out this week via reporting from The Athletic’s Mike DeFabo.
According to DeFabo’s sources, the Steelers are not interested in signing nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson if he’s released (as expected) by the Denver Broncos.
The Steelers are also not among the teams “actively working to trade for” Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields.
(Chicago is expected to select USC quarterback Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. And as a result, the Bears are expected to trade Fields.)
Finally, sources also tell DeFabo that Pittsburgh is not interested in signing free agent quarterbacks Kirk Cousins or Baker Mayfield.
That reporting further confirms that the Steelers are going to give Kenny Pickett, who is entering his third season in the NFL, one more chance to be “the guy” in Pittsburgh.
The hope in Pittsburgh is that new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith can help Pickett take a big step in his development in 2024. Smith previously helped Ryan Tannehill reach the only Pro Bowl of his career back in 2019 with the Tennessee Titans.
