Kenny Dalglish warns Liverpool ‘biggest threat’ in Premier League title race is not from rival

Liverpool is currently top of the Premier League table, but Sir Kenny Dalglish has named the ‘biggest threat’ to glory as Jürgen Klopp battles an injury crisis.

Liverpool legend Sir Kenny Dalglish has suggested that injuries could be a bigger threat to Liverpool’s Premier League title hopes than its rivals, Manchester City and Arsenal. He thinks the Reds’ injury problems might play a “vital” role in the title race, as both City and Arsenal have healthier squads.

Jürgen Klopp is currently missing key players like Mohamed Salah, Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Darwin Nunez, Dominik Szoboszlai and Diogo Jota. Some may be in line to return against Nottingham Forest, but it’s still a lengthy injury list.

Dalglish believes Liverpool’s own issues could cause more harm than Manchester City or Arsenal. On the No Tippy Tappy Podcast, he was asked if Arsenal, runner-up last season, was the biggest threat to Liverpool’s title chances.

“They’re not the biggest [threat] because Manchester City are in there as well,” Dalglish responded. “The biggest threat to Liverpool could be injuries.”

He added: “For me, Arsenal have got to go to Manchester and play Man City which is a big game. I don’t know why people think Arsenal haven’t got a vested interest and a threat, of course they’re a threat. They’re a threat because they deserve to be a threat.

“There is a lot of water still to pass under the bridge and if Arsenal are starting to get their players back, that have been injured, and we [Liverpool] are starting to lose ours then it could be vital. Man City obviously will be right in the thick of it.

“It’s fantastic that we’ve got three teams as good and as great quality as those three challenging a position and the title. You don’t get that in too many countries do you?”

Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Southampton on Wednesday set up an FA Cup quarter-final match with Manchester United. Before that match, Klopp confessed that Liverpool “need miracles” to quickly solve its injury problems.

Liverpool is off to play Nottingham Forest tomorrow, then it is back to its Europa League journey away to Sparta Prague next Thursday. With the Carabao Cup already won, Klopp’s final months at the club could see him bagging up to four trophies.

No matter what happens, fans are in for a thrilling title race which Dalglish is excited about. “Let me see how they get on but it’s a great competition and there are three teams that are an absolute credit to the Premier League,” the ex-Scotland player added.

“Whoever wins it deserves to win it because they will have got the most points. The more points, the more successful you’ll be.”
