Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan recently acknowledged the team needs to look into their inside linebacker position after dealing with multiple season-ending injuries last year.
The Steelers still have Elandon Roberts and Cole Holcomb under contract, and Mark Robinson is set to enter his third season, but they’ll likely want to add at least one more starter-worthy player in the offseason. Of the several free agents available, Pro Football Focus has tabbed four as their best fits, including a Super Bowl champion.
Headling the list of four is former Kansas City Chief Drue Tranquill, who started eight games for the defending champs last season. The 28-year-old spent four seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers before signing a one-year deal in Kansas City, and is now looking for his third NFL home.
Other names on the list included Denver Broncos’ Josey Jewell, Houston Texans’ Blake Cashman and Buffalo Bills’ Tyrel Dodson.
“Steelers general manager Omar Khan didnโt seem overly optimistic about Cole Holcombโs status for the early portion of 2024 as he returns from a knee injury, and he mentioned linebacker as a position of interest in the upcoming draft. Perhaps Pittsburgh gets started early and adds a good coverage backer to play alongside thumper Elandon Roberts,” PFF wrote about Jewell.
If Holcomb isn’t available for the start of the 2024 season, another veteran signing will start alongside Roberts. If he is available, look for Pittsburgh to sign a third starter-capable player to compliment the two already on their roster.
