Why The Steelers Absolutely Need A New Safety In 2024, But Definitely ‘Not Adams’

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signaled their intent to bolster their safety position, emphasizing their pursuit of additional talent. Ray Fittipaldo, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, recently discussed various offseason topics concerning the Steelers when he joined The Fan Hotline with Adam Crowley and Dorin Dickerson.

Fittipaldo shared insights into these matters, offering valuable perspectives on the team’s strategy and priorities moving forward. As the conversation unfolded, Fittipaldo delved into various aspects of the Steelers’ offseason plans, shedding light on potential roster moves and areas of focus for the organization.

In discussing the team’s needs and aspirations, Fittipaldo provided an informed analysis that resonated with Steelers fans and NFL enthusiasts alike.

The Seattle Seahawks recently parted ways with three-time Pro Bowler Jamal Adams, sparking speculation about his next destination. While some pundits suggest the Steelers should consider acquiring the former All-Pro, Fittipaldo remains skeptical about the likelihood of such a move to Pittsburgh.

“Not Adams, I mean Adams is a guy who’s always wanted a big contract even though he’s definitely at the tail end of his career. He’s strictly a box safety, and I think the Steelers like to be more versatile at their back end, but they do need a safety.”

While Fittipaldo lacks confidence in the Steelers pursuing Adams, he does foresee their dedication to seeking reinforcements at the safety position.

“They were scouting safeties hard at the [NFL] Combine, and I think they will do the same throughout free agency.”

Fittipaldo firmly believes that the Steelers are actively seeking a complementary player to join forces with Minkah Fitzpatrick, their standout safety and one of the team’s premier players.

“I think ideally, you would like to find that long-term partner who can grow with Minkah Fitzpatrick. Whether that comes via free agency or the draft, I think that is a priority for the Steelers this offseason.”

He mentioned that players like Damontae Kazee serve as the team’s third safety option, but pointed out that he has struggled with penalties and suspensions. Fittipaldo questions Kazee’s long-term viability, especially considering he has just one year remaining on his contract. Additionally, he noted that Keanu Neal performed adequately before his injury, but he doubts the organization’s long-term confidence in either player.

Steelers Most Likely Won’t Pursue Jamal Adams
The Steelers’ 2024 offseason has been a whirlwind of activity, marked by a relentless pursuit of improvement and strategic maneuvering. While many questions still linger, the team’s proactive approach has yielded promising results, showcasing their resilience and determination.

As they continue to fine-tune their roster and address areas of need, the Steelers are laying the groundwork for a successful campaign. With each passing day, they inch closer to finding the answers to their lingering questions, all while staying true to their commitment to excellence.

According to insights provided by Fittipaldo, a prominent observation is that the Steelers are currently emphasizing bolstering their support for the safety position within their team roster. Despite the enthusiasm among some Steelers enthusiasts regarding the potential acquisition of a high-profile player such as Adams for the team, there are rational arguments against this proposition.

Adams, presently 28 years old, confronts challenges with consistent on-field presence due to a history of injuries. He has only been able to play in 10 games during the last two seasons. This not only raises concerns about his capacity to perform at his previous peak level, but also diverges from the archetype of a safety typically sought after by the Steelers organization. The idea of Adams is a good one, but it just simply doesn’t make sense and most likely won’t happen.

As the offseason unfolds, the Steelers are actively addressing longstanding concerns. Adding a safety to complement Fitzpatrick would be a significant victory for an organization renowned for its formidable defense. The 2024 offseason is still fresh and many questions remain left without answers. In the upcoming months, Steelers fans will start to see more answers solved. It’s an exciting time for fans of the organization.
