Skiing superstar Lindsey Vonn has admitted she is still in “survival mode” and is not ready to decide whether her legendary career is finished following a horrifying crash at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
The 41-year-old American icon, widely regarded as one of the greatest alpine skiers ever, suffered a devastating crash just 13 seconds into her women’s downhill run in Cortina, Italy. Racing just nine days after tearing her ACL, Vonn hooked a gate, lost control, and broke her leg and ankle in a high-speed fall that required her to be airlifted off the mountain.
Since the February 8 incident, Vonn has undergone eight operations, including procedures that doctors said prevented the amputation of her left leg. She now faces one final surgery to remove metalwork and reconstruct her ACL, followed by at least another year and a half of intense recovery before she could even consider returning to full training.
“I just don’t want to jump to any conclusions or even speculate on what I might do,” Vonn told the Associated Press. “I may retire. I may never race again and that would be completely fine, but I’m not in a position emotionally to make that decision at this point.”
The 2010 Olympic downhill champion described the injury as far more severe than any she had experienced before.
“I can deal with a lot of pain, but this was so extreme. It’s not even been in the universe of pain as what I’ve had before.”
Vonn added: “I’m still in survival mode. I just want to get through this phase and be able to assess where I am in my life.”
With 84 World Cup victories — second only to Mikaela Shiffrin — and a history of remarkable comebacks, including a partial knee replacement and unretirement in 2024, Vonn had been tipped for a medal in what was expected to be her final Olympics. Instead, the Games became another brutal test of her legendary resilience.
For now, the focus remains on healing. Vonn is taking her time, refusing to make any emotional or rash decisions about her future in the sport.
Whether this marks the end of one of skiing’s most decorated careers or yet another chapter in her extraordinary fightback story, Lindsey Vonn continues to show the world what real strength and courage look like — even when the finish line is nowhere in sight.
