Olympic skiing legend Lindsey Vonn traded snow for hardwood courtside, earning her first-ever role as honorary captain for the Los Angeles Lakers — only for the purple-and-gold season to slam shut in brutal fashion.
In an emotional Instagram post Tuesday, the 41-year-old alpine superstar wrote: “Playoff basketball 🏀!! Was my first time as honorary captain. Thank you @lakers 💛 Sad that the season is over but that’s sports. There’s always next year 💪🏻”
Vonn, still recovering from a recent injury that left her on crutches at the Met Gala, brought star power to Crypto.com Arena for Game 4 against the Oklahoma City Thunder. She joined a glittering celebrity crowd that included Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Eddie Murphy — but stood out as the Lakers’ official honorary captain for the must-win matchup.
The Lakers, already down 0-3 in the series, gave fans false hope with a late lead before falling in a gut-wrenching finish. The Thunder completed the sweep, ending LA’s playoff run and Vonn’s courtside captaincy after just one unforgettable night.
In a pre-game NBA interview, Vonn gushed about the intensity of playoff hoops. “I love basketball, especially playoff basketball,” she said. “Being able to watch courtside, see how physical athletes are is impressive… to me as an athlete is insane.” She drew parallels between the grit required in basketball and her own high-stakes skiing career.
Vonn also highlighted her long friendship with LeBron James, noting they are the same age and that he reached out after her first big race win years ago. James has continued cheering her recovery on social media.
Though short-lived, Vonn’s cameo added glamour to a tough Lakers postseason. The ski icon, widely regarded as one of the greatest in her sport, continues sharing her recovery journey while proving her love for hoops runs deep.
Better luck next year — both for the Lakers and their honorary captain.
