She Could Barely Ski for Two Weeks. Then Lindsey Vonn Stopped the Olympic Clock at 1:44.19

Whistler still hears that clock. On February 17, 2010, Lindsey Vonn did not just win the Olympic women’s downhill. She buried a shin injury, chased a teammate who was already in the lead, and stopped the clock at 1:44.19 — a number skiing has refused to let go of.

She was 25. She was the favorite. She was also the skier who had barely been able to train in the two weeks before the Games. A deep shin bruise had turned every turn into a negotiation. Radio chatter at the start told her Julia Mancuso had just thrown down a run and was sitting first by nearly a second. Most athletes would have protected the leg. Vonn attacked the mountain.

Franz’s Downhill at Whistler Creekside was bumpy, fast, and unforgiving. Forty-five women from 22 nations. Clear skies. Compact snow. Vonn held an aggressive line the whole way — jaw, hands, knees, and hips angled forward, hunting speed. She was not clean. At Frog Bank she bobbled. Off the Hot Air jump, within sight of the finish, she flew and wobbled on the landing, skis trembling through the final tuck. Her husband, watching, yelled at the screen to just get down.

    She got down. 1:44.19.

Mancuso, the longtime rival and teammate, took silver in 1:44.75, 0.56 back. Austria’s Elisabeth Görgl claimed bronze in 1:45.65. It was the first Olympic downhill gold ever won by an American woman, and the first U.S. one-two in an Olympic Alpine race in 26 years. Her average speed on the course was about 101.5 km/h.

“It was a fight all the way down, but I told myself to keep pushing regardless of the consequences,” Vonn said. “I had to go for it every second.” Later she put it simpler: “I made it down. It’s awesome. It’s all I ever wanted.” Seeing her name next to the number one, she said, was the best feeling of her life.

That is why 1:44 never fades. It was not a perfect run. It was a wounded champion refusing to yield a single second on the biggest stage in the sport. Vancouver gave Lindsey Vonn her Olympic gold. The clock gave the rest of us a number we will simply never forget.
