Captain America Is Back on the Roster: Lindsey Vonn Named to U.S. Ski Team After the Crash That Nearly Ended It

Lindsey Vonn is not clicking into a start gate this weekend. She is still rebuilding a leg doctors once fought to save. And yet, on Wednesday night, U.S. Ski & Snowboard put her name on the 2026–27 World Cup squad anyway — the latest, loudest signal that the most stubborn comeback in alpine skiing is not over.

Call it what the internet already wants to call it. Captain America is back in action, even if the shield is still in the shop.

The 41-year-old — she turns 42 on October 18 — was one of 17 athletes named to the U.S. alpine team. The federation said every name met existing criteria. On paper, that is not a stretch. Last season, in a return from nearly six years away, Vonn finished 12th overall, fifth in the downhill standings, and the top-ranked American woman in super-G. She arrived at Milano Cortina as the downhill World Cup leader, with seven podiums in eight races, including two wins.

Then the mountain took the ending away.

On February 8 in Cortina, her Olympic downhill lasted about 13 seconds. She clipped a gate and crashed hard. The damage was a complex tibia fracture. She had already torn the ACL in her left knee at Crans-Montana on January 30 and raced the Games anyway. Multiple surgeries followed, in Italy and then back in the United States. She has said doctors saved the leg from amputation.

In April she was unsure she would race again. She also told NBC she was still flirting with another comeback — “very much to the dismay of my family” — because she loves ski racing and never got a last run. Her father, Alan Kildow, had been blunter after the crash, telling the Associated Press he considered the career finished.

The calendar says the next chapter is not this winter. Another operation is scheduled for November to remove metal from the leg and reconstruct the cruciate ligament. Recovery after that is expected to run about six to nine months. Vonn herself has pointed to 2027–28 as the earliest realistic return. Sölden opens the World Cup on October 24; the first downhill is Beaver Creek on December 11. She will not be in either start house. The International Ski Federation has still held a wildcard open if she decides to come back.

That is why the roster line hit like a plot twist. Inclusion is partly formal — she has not retired, and last year’s results still qualify — and partly a flare. Where Vonn’s name appears, the sport leans in. She already owns 84 World Cup wins, four overall titles, and the 2010 Olympic downhill gold. The Cortina crash was supposed to be the last frame. The team sheet says the credits have not rolled.

She has worn the metaphor before. In January 2018 she trained and raced in a Marvel/Spyder Captain America suit and posted the line that stuck: “Who said Captain America has to be a man anyways.” The suit is not back. The posture is. A skier who came out of retirement, tore a knee, raced an Olympics on it, shattered a leg, and still has her name on the national team is doing the only thing superheroes are allowed to do after the building falls on them.

    She gets up.
