Mikaela Shiffrin gave fans a rare first-person look at her training process this month, sharing a freeski run in Portillo, Chile, shortly after a giant slalom session.
The American star posted the short video on her YouTube channel, inviting viewers to “join the GOAT of ski racing” as she carved down the mountain in one of the world’s most scenic training venues. The clip follows earlier POV footage she shared of herself skiing giant slalom turns at Portillo, underscoring the focused work she has put into the discipline during her off-season camps.
The timing fits the broader shift Shiffrin announced for the 2026-27 season. After winning her third Olympic gold in slalom and claiming her sixth overall World Cup title last winter, she declared this year an “exploration season.” She is racing fewer slaloms in order to dedicate more training time and energy to giant slalom and Super-G, disciplines she has called areas of curiosity where she still wants to see how far she can go.
Portillo has long been a regular summer base for Shiffrin. This year she completed two shorter-than-planned camps there, describing the days as productive despite challenging snow conditions that forced schedule adjustments. She has rated her current ski feel as solid but with clear room for improvement heading into the season-opening giant slalom in Sölden, Austria, on October 24.
The freeski video offers a lighter counterpoint to the structured gate training. It shows Shiffrin moving freely on the snow with the same precise, athletic style that has defined her career, while giving fans a casual window into the work that continues behind the results. With her first slalom of the season not scheduled until Killington later in November, the Chile sessions represent a deliberate investment in the events she has chosen to prioritize.
