Liverpool returns to Premier League action this weekend after cup successes in the past week. As the Reds prepare to face Nottingham Forest, there is big praise for former captain Jordan Henderson, while a reported summer target would prefer a return to his former Premier League club. Henderson ‘a better captain’ than Gerrard
Jordan Henderson has endured a difficult time since leaving Liverpool at the end of last season. The England midfielder initially moved to Saudi Arabia but returned to Europe in January with Ajax. He is yet to taste victory with his new side and was an unused substitute in his side’s last Eredivisie match.
But former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood has praised Henderson, saying he should still be lauded for his Anfield career. Sherwood included the midfielder in his all-time Liverpool XI and told William Hill: “Steven Gerrard has to be in there, and I know my next player will cause a bit of a stir but I’ve got my reasons —Jordan Henderson.
“For me, Henderson is the greatest captain Liverpool have had in the Premier League era. I think he was a better captain than Steven Gerrard because Henderson won the Premier League and the Champions League.
“From a captain’s perspective, Henderson gives you more than what you see on the pitch and, Stevie might’ve done that as well, but Jordan is a manager’s dream. He’ll stick his team in line and push them in the right direction in terms of how to play for Liverpool and what the demands are from the manager.”
Henderson, 33, also lifted the FA Cup and Carabao Cup as Liverpool captain, alongside the UEFA Super Cup, Club World Cup and Community Shield.
Malen wants Arsenal return
Borussia Dortmund ace Donyell Malen is keen on playing for Arsenal again amid links to Liverpool. Bild reported this week that Dortmund would consider letting the Dutch international depart this summer for around $43m (£34m/€40m).
While Liverpool is unlikely to prioritize attacking additions this summer, the Reds are said to retain an interest in the 25-year-old, along with former club Arsenal. But it appears Malen has his heart set on a return to north London.
He told Voetballzone: “It is a dream to play in the Premier League still because I played in England as a youth. Arsenal is my favorite club. I was training with the first team, and I was 17, 18 at the time and I did make steps in the right direction, but I thought I had to just play professional football.”
Malen was sold by Arsenal to PSV in 2017 before joining Dortmund in 2021. He has scored 10 goals in the Bundesliga this season but Dortmund is reportedly looking to cash in to fund new signings.
