The New England Patriots did a lot this offseason after hiring Jerrod Mayo as their head coach after 24 seasons with the legendary Bill Belichick.
After going 4-13, the team’s worst record in more than 20 years, the Patriots replaced their head coach and are currently filling out the rest of their coaching staff.
They will have the third overall pick in the draft and will be looking to complete a complete rebuild after their worst year in decades. They are looking for new offensive and defensive coordinators and now there are reports that strong contenders are emerging for the defensive coordinator position from Mayo and the Pats.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington is the perfect person to fill the job. Covington has been the defensive line coach for four seasons and will now be upgraded to DC.
He helped develop players like Christian Barmore and Dietrich Wise and helped star Matthew Judon play his best football in New England. It is now clear that Covington will take over the defense under Jerrod Mayo as they have developed a great relationship over the last five years. Brer was quoted as saying of the strong contender:
“The first domino to fall [for the Patriots] could be DeMarcus Covington stepping down as defensive coordinator,”
Breer said Tuesday.Breere said Mayo’s relationship with Covington may have been a key factor in bringing in DeMarcus as the new defensive coordinator.
He’s proven he can really build a defensive line, as the Patriots have excelled in rushing defense in recent seasons, ranking second in that category this year.Covington’s hiring also follows New England’s efforts to bring talent into the organization and build it from within.
