Liverpool will be looking to get back to winning ways in the Premier League this weekend as Jürgen Klopp’s side prepares to face Burnley. The Reds suffered their first defeat of 2024 to fellow title contenders Arsenal on Sunday.
The loss arrived as a massive boost to Manchester City ahead of their clash against Brentford on Monday Night Football. Pep Guardiola’s side had the opportunity to cut the gap to just two points on Liverpool, which they did thanks to a hat-trick by England international Phil Foden.
City currently holds a game in hand on Klopp’s side as we approach the next round of fixtures. And we could see last season’s treble winners rise to the top of the table momentarily with a win against Everton in Saturday’s early kick-off.
The likes of Arsenal, City, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur will all be hoping Liverpool will drop points once again this weekend, as they look to close in on the Reds within the standings. Here, Liverpool.com takes a scan around the Premier League and across the continent to see what’s going on at Liverpool’s rivals.
According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea is concerned that sacking manager Mauricio Pochettino would put it in danger of breaking Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules. The Blues currently sit in the bottom half of the table despite spending over $1bn on transfers since 2022.
The Chelsea boss is under an increasing amount of pressure from both the fanbase and hierarchy at the club with back-to-back defeats to Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers last week only adding to the calls for him to be sacked. However, if the club were to part ways with yet another manager, they would need to pay around $12.5m (£10m/€11m) due to him having 18 months left on his current deal.
A loss such as this would put Chelsea in danger of breaching the spending rules within the top flight of English football, given the compensation to the Argentinian would contribute to their losses across a rolling three-year period. That is capped at $135m (£105m/€122m).
