Lindsey Vonn doesn’t do ordinary recoveries. Six months after a catastrophic crash at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics that left her with a complex tibia fracture, a broken ankle, and a leg so badly damaged doctors nearly amputated it, the skiing legend is back under the bar.
In a powerful Instagram recovery montage posted this summer, Vonn documented her journey from wheelchair to weighted barbell squats. The video starts with tentative early rehab steps and ends with the three-time Olympic medalist loading up and driving through full back squats — a moment she captioned with quiet triumph: “I knew one day I’d get here, just didn’t know how long it would take me… It took 5 months, but I’m finally here!”
The Feb. 8 crash came just 13 seconds into the women’s downhill. Vonn clipped a gate, was thrown violently, and suffered injuries she later called “by far the most extreme and painful and challenging” of her career — “times 100.” She developed compartment syndrome, underwent multiple surgeries (including a lifesaving fasciotomy), and spent weeks immobile.
Yet here she is: strength returning, mentality sharp, and already stacking plates.
Vonn has been transparent about the long road still ahead — metal still needs to come out, her ACL still needs repair — but the message is pure Vonn: keep going.
The GOAT of American alpine skiing is rewriting the recovery script one heavy squat at a time.
