Mikaela Shiffrin’s Surprisingly Simple Habit That Keeps Her Sharp After Olympic Gold

Mikaela Shiffrin captured her third Olympic gold medal with a dominant performance in the women’s slalom at the 2026 Milano Cortina Games, winning by a commanding 1.50 seconds. The American skiing star has rewritten the record books and carried enormous expectations for more than a decade. Yet the habit she relies on most to stay sharp and recover has nothing to do with advanced recovery technology, elaborate routines, or cutting-edge science.

    It is napping.

Shiffrin has repeatedly called sleep her most important recovery tool. Beyond a full night’s rest, she prioritizes short daily naps — between training sessions, between race runs, and even on the biggest stages of her career. “I try to nap every day,” she has said. In her view, recovery begins and ends with sleep.

During the critical window between her two slalom runs in Cortina, Shiffrin retreated to the Team USA tent in an attempt to rest and control her energy, a ritual she has practiced for years. She has long been known to find a quiet corner, put on noise-canceling headphones, and shut out the world for 30 to 60 minutes. Sometimes she falls into a deep sleep; other times she simply rests in a light state that resets her focus.

The sport demands short bursts of extreme concentration — roughly 60 to 90 seconds of high-intensity skiing — followed by downtime. Shiffrin has explained that this pattern leaves her drained, and a brief nap is how she recharges. Her simple secret to falling asleep almost anywhere, she has said, is simply being tired enough.

This small, consistent habit mirrors the same attention to detail that has made Shiffrin the most successful alpine skier in World Cup history. While others chase the latest recovery trends, she stays grounded in the fundamentals: sleep, nutrition, hydration, and daily consistency. After her gold-medal win, she posted a photo of herself in pajamas in bed with the medal still around her neck — a quiet reminder that even the greatest champions understand the value of rest.

In an era that glorifies constant motion, Shiffrin’s approach is a quiet counterpoint. The skier who just added another Olympic title to her legacy stays at the top by regularly hitting pause. One short nap. That is all it takes.
