Liverpool’s season so far has been punctuated with surprising success from their academy players.
With Liverpool beset by injury problems, a number of young players have had to step into the breach. Aside from the headlines names like Jarell Quansah and Conor Bradley, the likes of Jayden Danns, James McConnell and Bobby Clark have all turned up impressively.
But according to former Reds winger Steve McManaman, there are a couple of others who would also do well if given the chance. Unfortunately for them, they’re currently out on-loan, though.
Discussing the youth team’s current importance with The Mirror today, McManaman – who reportedly has growing influence in the academy – named Tyler Morton and Fabio Carvalho as two players who could have made a difference for Liverpool right now.
“But also, you have to talk about the ones who are on loan like Tyler Morton and Fabio Carvalho,” said the pundit, after praising the more senior graduates.
“They’re on loan at the minute and doing really well but unfortunately for them, they’ve just missed out on this opportunity because if they were here they’d be playing.”
Liverpool duo miss out
When planning for a season, you do have to factor injuries into the mix. Liverpool have had their fair share of crises over recent campaigns and should always be prepared for another.
In that respect, there are always going to be a few young players who are earmarked to step in.
This season, that clearly fell largely on Quansah and Bradley as well as the likes of Ben Doak, who were expected to supplement the first-team.
But never in anyone’s most vivid nightmares will they have expected to have to dig as deep into the academy as Liverpool have had to.
Of course, it isn’t a bad thing that more and more youngsters are getting their chance. The Carabao Cup win last month especially will have given them all so much moving forward. But nevertheless, it isn’t ideal.
However, no matter how hard you plan, you simply can’t keep every young player around just in case. Some are better of served with loans.
Morton actually very nearly stayed last summer. Had Ryan Gravenberch not been brought in on deadline day, the 21-year-old would have been a Liverpool player this season. More experienced than McConnell, Clark and the rest of the young midfielders, Morton would have played a huge amount.
From there, he could have kicked on and become a true mainstay in the first-team. He may still do that, but it does feel like a bit of an opportunity missed. Doing well at Hull, he will hopefully get his chance next season.
As for Carvalho, there’s no question he’d have been of some help, too. He would have certainly played a good chunk of games. But with his future up in the air, he’s perhaps better served playing week in week out, as he is doing with the Tigers
